It is only 5 days until Christmas and I just finish a painting of "Nana" who passed away this passed year. I never knew her nor do I know the family but I was privileged to paint her through my Christmas Portrait Promotion. Capturing an emotional connection is my desire. There is something about painting portraits that fascinates me. I pray that I can bring life, emotion, energy and personality. I have seen many portraits over the years, and while some are very good and portray a great likeness, they don't always capture personality and emotion. I hope that I achieved that with this portrait. This is my desire each time I paint.

I love painting faces because of love faces. I see each line and shadow. And when I paint I love to captive emotion and feel. I love to see if I can capture their personality and when you look at the portrait you are drawn to it because of what you see. This is one I did of my son Jonathan when he was just a baby. I remember that day I march all 3 children down to Sears for there photo.

I started painting while I worshiped in 2005. I believe in telling God how much He means to me and how I love Him. And one day I was writing our a prayer of praise and thanksgiving in my journal which I had done many times. This day I could not focus and my pen kept slipping to side of the page to doodle a little sketch of a tree or whatever. Getting very upset with myself, I pleaded with the Lord to please help me focus on Him. I heard a voice inside my head say, "Welllll....isn't that the way I made you?" I am like...what? "Aren't you creative and didn't I give you that gift for a reason? Then use that to worship me."

So, I did. I set up a canvas and began to paint. I hadn't painted much before. I was very skilled in drawing and illustrating but I hadn't laid much paint on the canvas. But it was wonderful and God began to speak to me in ways that had never happened before.

I still love to paint in this way.

I put on some music and sing with my paint brush. I feel the closest to my LORD Jesus Christ when I do this. He tells me things. It is hard to explain but I heard someone say once that God talks to you how you listen. I always understand concepts better if I have a picture to look at and so I guess that is why this works for me.

Here is another Mellower Calmer Painting. I actually was surprised how this one turned out. One of my family members loves the calm feeling this one gives so I guess I did achieve what I started out to do and that was to paint some calming more subdued peices. It is supposed to be 2 lilies but she thought it looked like 2 doves. That is the beauty of painting impressionistic with a touch of abstract, from the heart, because it can speak differently to each person. Art is truely emotion!

I decide to do some Mellow Calm paintings this summer. Usually, I paint in bright colors and sometimes intense themes, so, I have been painting calmer more subdued colors. At least that is the intention but there always seems to be a turn in what I intend to what really happens.

Divine Transition

As we go from Winter to Spring, in Southern Alberta, it seems like a woman in labor. I think we had at least 3 or 4 snow storms in April and finally we are seeing some green grass and budding on the trees.

It has caused me to ponder that it is like trying transition to something different in our lives. We wait and then we try things but it seems like the current situation just keeps hanging on. We wonder if things will ever change into that next phase.

We desperately need Our Heavenly Father's loving direction with His supernatural hand print and DNA deposited into our lives to take us through a "Divine Transition."

Well, we had our Gala and Auction for the AIRdirondak Chair Project to raise funds for an Art Centre in Airdrie, Alberta.
12 chairs were auctioned off with a wonderful result of $8650.00 raised!!!

Mayor Linda Bruce bought my chair along with another one which she plans to put in her back yard.
It was such a fun evening with live music, wine and cheese. They are planning on making it an annual event so I hope I can go next year and support my friends who will be painting chairs, as there are alright another 12 artists ready to go.

Thanks to all that made this event a great sucess.

It Has Been an Incredible Summer

I know summer is not officially over yet but it always seems like it is when the end of August comes and we are inundated with back to school commercials. Even though I have no children on their way back to school this year (unless you count my new daughter-in-law on her way back to university) I still get that same feeling that summer is over.
Yes, it has been an interesting summer full of joys, challenges and wonders.
Everything from our son getting married to wonders in the sky. I don't think I will forget this one for a long time.

Fooling Around

I just read a news letter from Robert Genn entitled "The Fine Art of Fooling Around." I found it very encouraging because that is what I do most of the time with me Art. And come to think of it, most of what I do in life seems to be in this fashion. I don't really like doing things the normal way or the way most people are doing things; and what is normal anyway?

In the news letter he talks about loosening up, listening to music and getting happy. I can't turned out anything decent unless I do these things. I put on gospel praise music or just worship Jesus Christ in my thoughts and it always turns out so much better then I think it will.

I also work on numerous pieces at once. If I don't know what to do next I just put it aside until I do. I play a lot and don't worry if when I come back to a piece I want to completely paint over it. It doesn't matter because now I have some interesting texture underneath the paint-over. I experiment a lot and sometimes have a hard time remembering what I did to get a certain effect when I want to do it again. Oh ,Well, that is way it goes and now I know it is the fine art of fooling around!

Rejoice!

I have been working on this painting for a long time. I guess I am one of those artists that works on many paintings once. Sometimes I have look at it for awhile to see how I want to finish it. I work a little here and there.

Now, I had a hard time deciding what to name it. Oh my, well, usally I get a name for right away but this time I just couldn't think what I wanted to call it. Naming a painting is kind of like naming a child. As an artist you put so much into you work that it really does feel like your baby. They are special because you put something of yourself into each one.

Anyways back to the name. Well, I could call it something with flowers or garden in it but I have lots of those. I decided to think about how it made me feel and what it was saying to me; what I was trying to say through it. "Rejoice!" That's it!

Rejoice means to be glad; take delight; to rejoice in another's happiness; to make joyful; gladden: a song to rejoice the heart.

And THAT is what I want people to feel when they see this painting!

Summer Beauty

Summer is so beautiful this year because of the rain we've had. As I drove to my friends house through the country side I was just amazed at the beauty of the green fields intermingled with the bright yellow ones of canola meeting the brilliant blue sky on the horizon. The grand clouds billowing up were breathe-taking.

We sat around the table visiting and sipping tea. She showed me pictures she had taken of the sky the night before. Hasn't the sky been amazing this summer? We are in awe.

I painted some summer flowers she had placed in a little vase. The first one is called "Joyce's Flowers." The second is called "Boutique of Flowers" because each one of us is like a flower and when we all come together with our various gifts and personalities we form a beautiful boutique. We are better when we are together.

I am just enthralled with the Prairie Skies this summer. I don't know when I have seen them more breathe-takingly beautiful and unusual. I have really enjoyed painting them too because it seems that I have been painting them in my mind for years as we drive along.

I love the prairies with it enormous skies and expansive plains. Every day the upper atmosphere holds a new picturesque canvas of clouds billowing upward as if to touch the heavens; ever changing it's emotions as if monitored by an tell-tale meter or an endless hue of brilliant blue as the sun radiates her brilliance. We have a local saying here, "If you don't like the weather then just wait 10 minutes and it will change."

On the western horizon swooping down over the great Rocky Mountains roll the Chinook winds carrying the gathered warmth of the Pacific ocean giving the canvas skies an arc that stretches from corner to corner like an upside down smile.

A celebration of the arts that include handmade pottery bowls, live music & arts.

Well, I am finally starting to work on my AIRdirondak Chair project.

It is Airdrie's first AIRdirondak project. This project was created to stimulate interest in the arts in Airdrie and to begin a fundraising program for a future Arts Centre.

The chairs will be on display at the Empty Bowls Festival in Nose Creek Park on
June 12, 2010.

The Chairs will then go to 12 locations in Airdrie until September 30.
Auction date for the chairs to be determined (early October).

Musical Theme

I have never been musical; oh, I tried to take music lessons, sang in a few choirs as a kid etc...etc... but everyone knows in my family that is not my gift. But I do enjoying worshiping God the Father through Jesus Christ and I am closest to Him when I worship with my art accompanied by others providing the music. Whether I am on my own or with friends I just love some good worship music to take me to that place of Creating with God. After all He is The Great Creator!!
The first 2 paintings here were done at a ladies prayer group. The second one was done of one of the gals. God was truly blessed that day as she poured her heart out to Him on the grand and I got to capture it. It is a picture of how God views us when we give ourselves to Him.
The 3rd painting was done over a period of time in my own studio as I worshipped the Lord. I was pondering also, my heritage and thinking of what has been passed down to us from generations past. Were there musical individuals and could that be why some of my children have these gifts of musical abilities? It was done as a prayer also that these talents would be manifested in my children and their children.

I tried to capture this in the look of innocents yet intensity of purpose.

I love to capture more than a likeness; more then the shape of the face figures but to capture the emotion of the moment is what I like to aim for.

I have always been captivated by peoples faces. Never will I forget a face even if I forget the name. Faces tell so much about a person:

It tells if they are young or old

It tells if they are happy or sad

It tells if they are fair or dark or darker

It tells if they are male or female (usually)

It tells if hardship has been their friend

It tells... well so many things...

Faces can tell what is in the soul and what is on the mind. I love trying to capture that most of all. The challenge of capturing the likeness it really important but to capture a mood, a feeling, an emotion or the character of the person is very fulfilling.

This is part of a drawing that I did called, "Crisis Pregnancy Blessed Hope." I tried to imagine what it must have been like for Mary in those days when they would have stoned an unmarried woman who was caught pregnant.

Latte I always thought coffee was bad for me and preached this anti-coffee life-style to others for years. I don't know if it is my body changing or what but I love coffee now and it actually makes me feel better. I have since found out that it had health benefits. The last couple of years I went from not drinking coffee and still using an old drip coffee maker that I used for the occasional victims to an amateur coffee connoisseur with all kinds of methods and types of coffee. This is translating into my art work with "Tuesday Latte" and "Where the Coffee Comes From."

For the love of painting

No matter what I am going through or how I am feeling, for the most part, I can paint. It is such good therapy for me. I lose myself in it and it doesn't matter too much if it turns out all that great as long as I am messing about with my paints.

I organized my art room but after a few days of messing about in there it is getting a little creatively wild but that is ok because I can close the door.

Early Rising

Lately I have been rising very early. During the spring, summer and early fall it was 5 AM and I thought, oh my that was too early. Then the time change came and my body didn't change with it, so, I was not able to sleep past 4 AM. For a few nights it was 3 AM that my inner alarm clock went off. Now it is consistently 2 AM, so I have taken to crawling between the sheets around 7 PM in order to compensate.

I have been trying to use the time wisely at this early hour to pray, meditate, catch up on emails, do laundry, paint or write etc...etc... and sometimes all at the same time. Actually, there are a great many benefits to being up 6 hours before my husband.

One morning, however, I was a little annoyed as I lay there wondering if I could try to snatch a few more ZZZZZZZZZZ's or if I should just let my feet hit the floor and grope for those sleepers. Oh well, I finally decided I might as well get up. Eventually seated on the couch I turned on the computer and opened up my email. There was one of Robert Genn's bi-weekly news articles entitled, "In Praise of Early Rising." Well, I guess I have a condition but I am in good company because there are many greats that had/have it too, including "Picasso." It is nice to know that I am not alone and so I will just embrace it for now (even if it is just for awhile.) I really do get a lot more done getting up early then if I stayed up late.

I just love little girls. This is no one in particular. I just thought she looked like a "Sally" to me. I have 2 girls of my own. Even though they are in their 20's they are still my girls and I have found memories of their childhood when I could dress them in cute little pink dresses.
However, I want to do more people and portraits in particular. I have always been fascinated by people and faces. My friends used to get annoyed with me when I would stare at them or look intently at their mouth while they were talking to me. You can tell so much about a person by their face. You can capture their personality or mood in a portrait. One of my goals is to do just that. Capturing who someone is in a portrait or caricature. That sounds like fun to me because I really do enjoy the uniqueness of each individual.

It is this time of year when especially think about the baby that was born in a stable where the cattle were kept. What a Precious Gift that was and still is for the world.

As the story goes Mary was a prostitute and she was so moved by Jesus compassion that she washed His feet with her tears and dried them with her hair then anointed them with expensive perfume. " Kissed by Redemption" depicteds how Jesus feels about each one of us. He loves us enough to not only kiss us with His presence but die for us and thus redeme us from a life of eternal hell.

"HARVEST" for Love of the Prairies

I think I have been painting the prairies for years in my mind as I drive along them. I have fallen in love with the beauty of the fields and the ever changing huge skies. We are blessed to have the Rocky Mountains only a couple hours away and so we can see them on the distant horizon. It makes such a lovely view with the prairie fields and the ever changing seasons in the forefront framed by the horizon of majestic peaks of laden snow. I love it and am finally transferring that love onto canvas.

"Harvest" was painted completely from memory. Like I said I have been painting the prairies in my mind for years.

Garden Memories

I have been painting a lot of flowers lately with much texture. It just happened one day when I was experimenting with Acrylic paints. I did the background in flat paint by dabbing it with a folded paper towel which is an impressionistic technique. Then I put some gel media or slow-dri medium in my paint. It just wasn't looking right so I keep painting over and over until I got it the way that I liked which made it very textured. Now I have a technique that I been repeating and have gotten some really good responses.

I was pondering why I like to paint flowers so much. As a teen we moved to the beautiful Okanogan Valley from the prairies. I fell in love with the flowers and blossoms that seemed to flourish there. After I got married we moved to the West coast near the Pacific Ocean and I enjoyed even more lush beauty and lovely flowers that seemed to begin blooming near the end of February and last on into the late fall.

When our children were still very young we moved back to the prairies to Alberta. For years I missed the flowers and beauty of British Columbia even though I have fallen in love with the prairies with rocky mountains on the horizon. However, my love for those delicate blooms is still reflected in much of my art as you can see with "Garden Memories."

Self Learning

I was overjoyed to get some frames from Veronica. It was timely with our coming show on Saturday November 7th.
Of course we got chatting about art and somehow onto the subject of self learning. She loves to read and so learns a lot that way. I love to glean from wherever I can, too. Looking at art, reading about artists and what others say about art; searching the internet or even watching a little painting on the TV. I did take art in high school and correspondence courses but most of what I know has been self taught. When we were homeschooling the children one of the experts said it not so important the method you use or if they follow the grade system exactly but to teach them to be life-long self-learners. That is the key to success in any area of our lives. Education does not end at the steps of high school or university. It is only the beginning. Many successful people are self-taught individuals. To always be learning about your craft is one of life’s greatest joys.
One of the things that I did recently was to sign up for Robert Genn’s newsletter; very inspiring and motivating for me.

Impacting Creativity

I am realizing that to creatively impact my world has been a goal of mine since I was a teen. Recently, I was asked to join “Airdrie 7” similar to “The Group of 7” which was a famous Canadian group of Artists from the earlier part of the 20th century. They mostly depicted the Canadian landscape in a post-impressionistic style. Rhea Warholik commented, at our first meeting, that there was a Harris in the Group of 7 and we have a Harris of the “Airdrie 7” (which happens to be me).
Lawren Harris describes art with this quote: “a realm of life between our mundane world and the world of the spirit.” I really believe that art connects to our spirit in ways that nothing else can. It is for our whole being to experience. Our eyes take it in as our soul and spirit respond. If the artist has painted from their spirit and what is in their heart then the viewer will sense it. That is my main goal.

What a beautiful day for the Airdrie Centennial Celebrations. And what a good Art Show we had for some great artists in Airdrie! I was tired by the end but happy that I went. It was fun and great to see some of my friends stop by.

My First Sketchcrawl "Find a Moment"

A great cappuccino in hand... now what!

Hummm...what to draw?

...well, maybe I will draw my coffee cup!

Oh, the lady sitting at the table next to us has been sitting very still while she is reading paper. Maybe I could do a cartoon of her leaning on a big coffee cup.

After adding in some palm trees which weren't really there but gave the feeling of rest and relaxation, a huge banana emerged, a french press then a bird.

I replaced the Starbucks logo with 5 BUCK because that is what you usually pay. (I learned that from my friends Dan and Maryanne.)

Starbucks is our little luxury!

A Canadian 5 dollar bill appeared too because after all we are in Canada!

Anyways... when I brought it home my daughter said, "It kind of looks a little like Where's Waldo." So, I snuck in words here and there that depicted "The Coffee Shop Experience." And I called it "Find a Moment" because we all need to find a moment to relax with coffee.

I decided to dedicate this little painting to the gracious manager, Ilja, and her staff at Airdrie Starbucks on Main Street just across from Staples! Thanks so much for making me feel welcome and cared for.

Sunny Day Flowers

This little 5 X 7 Acrylic painting looks really cute in a little frame. It is my little impressionistic painting. I enjoyed painting it. It felt like I was painting a sunny day in the garden. How pleasant that would be, sigh. I guess I am longing for spring and summer!

Bright Pink Flowers

This seems to be my color of choice these days. I had some put in my hair I want to wear it and I have a new purse with these colors. I think it is a happy color that is full of life. What I wish for myself these days as I ponder turning fifty!

I felt incredible joy when I painted this peice. I painted it to the voices of "The African Children's Choir." As I pondered their little lives and all that they had been through, yet could sing with such joy, it filled my heart with joy too.

ESTHER More Than Just A Pretty Face

Esther... more than just a pretty face. As a woman I am more then just a pretty face even though it is getting harder to keep the outer beauty as the years add up. I want to be caring, inspiring, helpful, thoughtful, loving, truthful, a good friend and so much more.

I also want see other women for who they really are. The treasures shining through for all to see or barried deep inside them for me to dig for; both are so rewarding to discover.
